Glass lined steel is a very interesting material for different kinds of applications because of its strength, resistance, environmental friendliness, easy to clean characteristic, hygienic attributes, colour and last but not least its recycling possibility. One of these applications is the use of enamelled panels for the lining of tunnels.
The panels improve traffic safety, light and acoustic conditions and decrease energy and maintenance costs. The horrible accidents in the Mont Blanc tunnel (between Italy and France), Tauern tunnel (Austria) and in the St. Gotthard tunnel (Switzerland) directed the attention of authorities and technicians to the problematic safety in a tunnel in case of fire protection and traffic safety.
The most important requirements for tunnel linings:
fire protection for the tunnel construction and supply lines
improvement of light conditions and consistent light spreading
colour resistance, easy cleaning
thermal shock resistance
improvement of noise level and noise reduction at the tunnel entrance
integrated marks and signs
easy assembly and disassembly
But porcelain enamel is also available for cars and motorcycles. Individually produced exhaust systems which are suitable to painting are getting more common.
